Creative question develops intellectual ability of students: educationists

DHAKA, Nov 17, 2012 (BSS) - Creative question introduced at Secondary School Certificate (SSC) and Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) levels is helping students to develop their intellectual ability and creative thinking through the practice of brainstorming.

"The new system has created a scope for students to show their creative knowledge and think broadly while giving answers of creative questions," Prof Fahima Khatun, chairman of Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Dhaka, told BSS.

"Traditional examination system encourages students to memorize only, which in turn is hampering their development of intelligence and understanding capacity. As a result, the traditional system has failed to improve the quality of education of the country," she added.

The Dhaka Board chairman said students have welcomed the new
system as they achieved brilliant results at both SSC and HSC
level examinations by scoring good marks.

Under creative question paper method, students have to go
through the entire texts of each subject and have to try to think
and understand the content more, in order to give correct
answers, Prof Fahima added.

She said most students do not understand the theme of a
topic under the traditional system, which largely is hampering
their intellectual development and thinking pattern.

"We have introduced the method of creative question papers
in 21 subjects in this year's SSC examinations while seven
subjects in 2011 and two subjects in 2010," said Prof Fahima.

Three subjects have been brought under creative question
paper system at the HSC level, she said, adding creative question
should be introduced at all public examinations as it is a modern
and effective system for improving the quality of education.

The ministry of education and other organizations concerned
are sincerely working to introduce the system at public
examination aiming to bring a meaningful change in the country's
overall education sector, Prof Fahima added.

Traditional question system gives more focus on memorization
power of students while the creative question encourages
brainstorming, Principal of Viquarun Nisa Noon School & College
Monju Ara Begum said.

Students must understand texts and read all subject matters
thoroughly to give correct answers, she said, adding examinees
also have to know about the regular current affairs alongside
textbooks, to give full answers to the questions.

Referring to the good results achieved at HSC and SSC
examinations, Monju Ara Begum said the creative question paper
system contributed to achieving an impressive success both at SSC
and HSC examinations in recent years.

"There is no alternative to reading the books thoroughly for
a student to answer each and every question in the creative
question paper system. A student cannot do well without having an
in-depth knowledge about the subject matters," she added.
