Tangail by-poll tomorrow

DHAKA, Nov 17, 2012 (BSS) -Security measurers have been tightened in and around the polling stations to hold free, fair and peaceful by- election to Tangail-3 (Ghatail) constituency to be held tomorrow.

A total of 4,000 members of law enforcement agencies comprising Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), Bangladesh Police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Ansar have been deployed in the constituency during the election to maintain law and order.

Members of the law enforcing agencies have been asked to continue their duties till two days after the election from the poll day, an Election Commission (EC) official said.

Additional Secretary of the EC Mohammad Sirajul Islam told BSS that a total of 27 members of security forces would remain deployed at each polling station round the clock to ensure chaos free neutral election.

Moreover, 40 executive magistrates and four judicial magistrates will be on duty on the day, while eight executive magistrates and four judicial magistrates have been continuing their duties from November 4. They are monitoring election activities of the candidates, he said.

Meanwhile, necessary instruments and other materials related to the by-poll have been reached in the constituency.

The additional secretary said Bangladesh police will conduct mobile courts each headed by one judicial magistrate while BGB will conduct four mobile courts in the constituency area.

According to EC sources a total of 2,71,329 voters including 1,39,543 female and 1,31,786 male voters are expected to exercise their voting rights tomorrow in the Tangail-3 constituency.

The commission announced the by-election schedule on October 8 for holding election on November 18.

The parliamentary seat of Tangail-3 constituency fell vacant following the death of Awami League lawmaker Dr Matiur Rahman on September 13 in India.

Shahidul Islam Lebu has been contesting the Tangail-3 by- poll with Awami League ticket while Syed Abu Yusuf Abdullah Tuhin is competing the election with 'Langol' symbol of Jatiya Party.

Besides, Amanur Rahman Khan Rana is contesting the by-poll as an independent candidate with 'Pine Apple' symbol.
