'New curriculum at primary, secondary education next year'

DHAKA, Nov 18, 2012 (BSS) - After 17 years, new curriculum is going to be introduced at primary and secondary education levels from the next academic year aiming to make education creative, pro-life and time-befitting.

"The existing academic activities are going on under the curriculum, which was introduced in 1995. But it needs to be changed to make our education modern and creative," Education Minister Nurul Islam Nahid told a press briefing in the conference room of the Ministry of Education.

Education Secretary Dr Kamal Abdul Naser Chowdhury and senior officials of the ministry, among others, were present at the press conference.
National Curriculum-2012 has been prepared in line with the National Education Policy-2010 by incorporating latest development of society and different disciplines of knowledge, Nahid added.

Under the new curriculum, a total of 111 textbooks have been made from class one to class ten, the minister said.

As the existing curriculum was prepared 17 years ago, it could not meet the latest demand of society, the minister said.

Taking this into consideration, subject matters of the textbooks under new curriculum have been prepared for creative and cognitive development of students.

"We are giving training to the teachers so that they can teach students properly under new curriculum," Nahid added.

Other speakers said subject matters were prepared in the existing textbooks giving priority to memorize only.

Both learning and teaching methods have been changed under the new curriculum aiming to develop intellectual ability and individual skills of students, they added.
