1,100 maunds of mango ripened with chemicals destroyed

DHAKA, May 19, 2018 (BSS) - A mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) today jailed six persons and destroyed 1,100 maunds of mango on charges of ripening those with chemicals in the city's Mirpur Mazar Road wholesale market.

"We have sentenced different jail terms to six persons for ripening mangos using chemicals and destroyed 1,100 maunds of chemically treated mangos," said Executive Magistrate Sarwar Alam of RAB -4.

During the drive, they found that carbide, ethephon and other chemicals were used in high doses to ripen the mangoes despite they bore labels prohibiting its application in fruits, he said.

The traders used chemicals in ripening the naturally immature mangos well before their real time of ripening for making some quick buck, he added.
