Five killed in Bandarban landslide

BANDARBAN, May 21, 2018 (BSS) - Five people were killed and one was injured in a landslide at Ghumdhum union of Naikhongchhari upazila here today.

The deceased were identified as Sona Miah, 30, Abu Ahamd, 32, Nurul Hakim, 25, Jasim Uddin, 24, and Nur Ahamed, 35.

According to the upazila administration, the incidents took place when workers were cutting a hill in Ghumdhum area of the upazila.

Five workers died when a chunk of mud collapsed on them this afternoon while they were cutting a portion of a hill to construct a sewage canal at Boroitoli village in the Monjoypara area of the Ward-9, Ghumdhum Union Parishad chairman AKM Jahangir Aziz told BSS.

Injured Belal was rescued from the spot and sent to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, he said.

Local people and upazila administration were jointly conducting rescue operation to recover the bodies of the victims.

Deputy Commissioner of Bandarban Md Aslam Hossain said after conducting a probe into the incident, a case will be filed against the people involved in cutting hills by workers.
