Sheikh Kamal was the first to be martyred on Aug 15, 1975

DHAKA, August 4, 2014 (BSS) -Although Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the main target of the August killings, Sheikh Kamal was the first to be martyred. Bazlul Huda shot Bangabandhu's eldest son Sheikh Kamal with his sten gun.

From the deposition of Havildar Kuddus Sikder, one of the security
personnel of Bangabandhu's house, it was also learnt that the first to enter the house was Major Bazlul Huda and Captain Noor Chowdhury. There were others with him.

On entering the house they saw Sheikh Kamal. Bazlul Huda immediately shot him with his sten gun. Sheikh Kamal moved away from the porch and went into the reception room. There he was shot to death.

The narrative is in sync with the one provided by the personal assistant of Bangabandhu Bhavan and the person to file the Bangabandhu Murder Case, Muhitul Islam, who was a first person witness also.

From the telephonic discussions Bangabandhu had with then Chief of Army Staff General Shafiullah it is also evident that this is true. Shafiullah in interviews published in 1987 and 1993 said, "It was probably 5 or 5:30 in the morning of 15th August or it could have been a little later, Bangabandhu had called me and said, "Shafiullah, your forces have attacked my house. Probably they have killed Kamal. Quick send some forces."

Expatriate writer and researcher Golam Murshid gives details in his book, "Muktijuddho -o-Tarpor". He says after killing Sheikh Kamal, Mohiuddin and his accomplices were going around the house to locate Bangabandhu. Finally, they saw him in the front veranda. The very epitome of courage, Bangabandhu was standing calmly - pipe in hand.

Seeing him, even the killer Mohiuddin was perplexed. He could not shoot at Bangabandhu. He merely uttered, "Sir, please come with us." When finally they were dragging him down the stairs, Bangabandhu shouted, "Where are you taking me?"

At this point Mohiuddin was asked to move away by Huda and Noor opened
fire with his sten gun.

At 5:40 in the morning Bangabandhu fell down on the stairs. He still held his pipe in his right hand. Some bullets had pierced his right chest and belly.

After killing Bangabandhu the killers' mission was not over. Mohiuddin, Huda and Noor left the house leaving it to personnel from the lancers and artillery who entered the house under the leadership of Aziz Pasha and Muslehuddin.

Pasha went upstairs with his men. Subedar Wahab Joardar was already up
there. They went and picked up Russell, Sheikh Naser, a servant and took them downstairs.

In the bedroom Pasha and Muslehuddin shot Begum Mujib, Sheik Jamal and his wife, along with Kamal's wife, with a sten gun.

Downstairs, the killers had kept Russell in the guardroom. Russell was
crying and saying he wanted to go back to his mother. Pasha ordered a
Havildar to take him to his mother. The Havildar truly took him to his
mother, upstairs and shot him dead from point blank range. Part of his skull flew away.
