Varsities extend initiatives to promote Bangabandhu's ideal

DHAKA, August 07, 2017 (BSS) - The country's leading public universities have extended their initiatives to promote the ideology of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

The initiatives include setting up of different institutes, departments and chairs for carrying out extensive researches on the life, speeches and political activities and ideology of the Bangabandhu.

A university has decided to introduce a full course on Bangabandhu while another one is planning on launching a new department after the name of the greatest son of this soil.

Jahangirnagar University (JU) has established an institute named "Bangabandhu Institute of Comparative Literature and Culture", which will be inaugurated this year for enrolling students for the 2017-2018 academic session.

"The objective of the new institute is providing student higher education on comparative literature and culture, but the curriculum will include a full course for 100 marks on Bangabandhu and Bangladesh", Director of the Institute Shamim Reza said.

An international cultural museum will be set up in the institute, which will showcase the history of liberation war and heritage and culture of the country.

Reza said after getting approval from the University Grants Commission (UGC) the authorities advertised in the newspaper for recruiting teachers.

The Islamic University (IU) has decided to set up a 'Bangabandhu Chair' under the Bangla Department of the university in Kushtia.

Chittagong University (CU) is going to set up an IT Park after the name of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Iftekhar Uddin Chowdhury told BSS.

He said the site for the "Bangabandhu IT Park" has been selected, and the construction work of the park would start once ECNEC approves the project.

Professor Chowdhury said the university would also launch a chair titled 'Bangabandhu Chair' at the Arts or Social Science faculty.

Referring to the meetings, seminars and symposiums on Bangabandhu being held regularly in the university, the CU VC said a department after the name of Bangabandhu would also be introduced in the university.

"The university inaugurated the first commemorative plaque of Bangabandhu on the campus in 2015," he said adding that all cultural activities of the university are now being held here regularly.

Dhaka University (DU) launched 'Bangabandhu Chair' in 1999 at its history department for conducting researches on Bangabandhu. Besides the "chair", the history department has also been carrying out different research works, seminars and symposiums on Bangabandhu since its inception period.
