FENI, May 20, 2018 (BSS) - Travelers journeying on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway are expressing their gratitude to the Bangladesh Army as one side of the Fatehpur Railway Overpass here has already been opened for vehicular movement.
"The traffic movement in this area is now comfortable. Now, we can cross the area within 10-15 minutes, cost two to three hours earlier," Abu Sufian, a passenger of the Ena Paribahan, told BSS here today.
After taking responsibility for constructing the overpass, he said, Bangladesh Army has been working relentlessly to implement the project within the scheduled time. He hoped that the both sides of the overpass will be opened within a short time.
Delowar Hossain, a track driver, said vehicles movement in this area was very difficult as the construction work of railway overpass turned the four-lane highway into a single lane. "After opening the one side, the overpass makes Dhaka-Chattogram road communication easy, quick and traffic jam-free," he added.
Talking to BSS, a senior official of the project said the construction work continues with full swing to ease road communication between Dhaka and Chattogram port city. "We are working day and night to implement the project as soon as possible. The construction of the overpass is expected to be completed by July this year," he added.
Kabir Ahmed Bhuiyan, Chairman of Al Amin Construction Company Limited, said they received the work order to implement the project in the first half of 2017. "After receiving the work order, we have been working hard to complete the project," he added.
Inspector of the Feni Traffic Department Mir Golam Faruque said the passengers suffered a lot on the Dhaka-Chattogram highway as traffic tailback has been a common phenomenon here.
"Passengers of the Dhaka-Chattogram highway were experiencing 15 to 20 kilometers traffic jam here. The introduction of one side of the overpass has made the traffic movement easy," he added.
Highway police said people could not enjoy the opportunities of the Mohipal six-lane flyover, which was opened recently by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, and four-lane Dhaka-Chattogram highway for the construction of the railway overpass. Now, they can enjoy the facilities of the country's first six-lane flyover, he added.
Shipo PBL Limited, a construction firm, was entrusted with the construction work in 2012. But, the firm failed to complete the work. Later, Bangladesh Army's 34 Engineering Construction Brigade was assigned for implementing the project. In 2017, it gave work order to the Al Amin Construction Company Limited to construct the overpass. The Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges had taken up the Taka 65-crore overpass construction project.
